'Frostpaw the Polar Bear' Joins President Obama During Hawaii Vacation

President Urged to Reject Keystone Pipeline, Address Climate Crisis

OAHU, Hawaii— The Center for Biological Diversity’s Frostpaw the Polar Bear has arrived in Oahu for President Obama’s holiday vacation to urge him to reject the Keystone XL pipeline and take action on climate change.

From today to Jan. 3, the Center’s polar bear mascot will bring his unique brand of environmental activism to the streets, beaches, golf courses and other public places on Oahu. He’ll join Obama’s vacation fun by participating in similar activities — golfing, reading, going to the beach, playing basketball — in hopes of catching the president’s attention and delivering the “No Keystone XL” message.

Frostpaw just finished a weeklong vigil outside the White House during the Thanksgiving holiday and has been present at more than a dozen of the president’s fundraisers and other media events in the last year in places like Martha’s Vineyard, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

“If polar bears — and the rest of us — are going to have a future on this planet, we need to address the climate crisis head-on. And the first step ought to be rejecting the Keystone pipeline,” said the Center’s Keystone campaigner, Valerie Love. “Keystone may be thousands of miles away, but the effects of climate change will be felt right here in Hawaii, including rising oceans, coral reef destruction and extreme weather events.”

Background
Scientists say two-thirds of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050 if climate change is left unchecked. Dr. James Hansen, one of the world’s leading climate scientists, says the Keystone XL pipeline would be “game over” for avoiding the worst effects of the climate crisis.
